Is that a Kangaroo or Koala on your face?

With the introduction of social distancing measures due to COVID-19, wearing face masks has become an essential part of daily life.

As the demand for masks surged, shortages became common, prompting many individuals to start sewing their own face coverings. This DIY approach not only addressed the scarcity but also allowed for customisation to improve comfort, especially for those who had to wear masks for extended periods.

Initially, face masks were predominantly seen as a medical necessity, but as they became a ubiquitous accessory, the need for comfort and functionality grew. Homemade masks offered a solution, allowing people to choose softer fabrics and designs that provided a better fit. Additionally, DIY masks enabled the incorporation of features such as adjustable ear loops, nose wires, and multiple layers of fabric for enhanced protection.

Comfort was a significant consideration, particularly for those in professions requiring long hours of mask-wearing, such as healthcare workers, teachers, and retail employees. Many found that commercially available masks could cause irritation, discomfort, or even skin issues after prolonged use. In response, homemade masks often used materials like cotton, which is breathable and gentle on the skin. Some designs also included filter pockets, allowing for additional layers of protection without compromising on comfort.

Functionality remained a crucial aspect of mask design. While ensuring comfort, homemade masks had to be effective in preventing the spread of the virus. This meant adhering to guidelines from health authorities regarding the number of layers, the types of fabric to be used, and the overall fit. For instance, tightly woven fabrics were recommended for their better filtration capabilities, and designs that provided a snug fit around the nose and mouth were preferred to minimise gaps.

An Oakland-based company, Bilio, has taken a strategic approach to its knit-to-fit face masks, which are designed for long-term use. Utilizing facial sizing data, Bilio has developed an ergonomic design that “hugs your smile,” ensuring a comfortable and secure fit. One of the standout features of these masks is the embedded copper nose crimp, which provides superior fit and stability, reducing gaps and enhancing protection.

In addition to the thoughtful design, Bilio incorporates advanced materials to enhance the masks’ functionality. Each mask is made with interwoven anti-microbial silver yarn by X-STATIC, threaded into recycled polyester. This innovative use of materials helps to inhibit and eliminate bacteria, providing an added layer of hygiene and safety.

Bilio’s masks are washable and reusable, making them an eco-friendly choice. They are currently available in two styles: the Koala, which does not include filters, and the Kangaroo, which features a pouch for replaceable filter inserts. Both styles are made from recycled materials, further emphasizing Bilio’s commitment to sustainability.

To ensure the masks remain clean and uncontaminated when not in use, each one comes in a resealable, food-grade airtight pouch for storage. This practical feature adds to the convenience and longevity of the masks, making them ideal for everyday use.

Bilio’s approach to face mask design demonstrates a blend of ergonomic precision, advanced antimicrobial technology, and environmental responsibility. Their products not only offer superior comfort and protection but also contribute to reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices.
